The Importance of Retinol and Why You Need It

Vitamin A: The Gold Standard of Skincare

Did you know that at the ripe age of 30 we start to lose 1% of collagen every SIX months? That’s the reason you start to see signs of the dreaded aging process, which will only increase as you grow older. Bummer, am I right?! Toss in parenthood and I’ve aged 20 years in a matter of only a few. #saveme

If you’re anything like me a few years ago, you’ve heard of Retinol (or Retinoids), but don’t know much about what it is or why you need it. These are derivatives of Vitamin A, which is considered the gold standard in skincare. This is due to its ability to not only improve your skins texture + increase collagen; but it also protects the skin from aging – reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scarring + hyperpigmentation. Do I have your attention yet? Hold your horses though – there are different strengths of Vitamin A out there, and knowing the difference is an important piece of choosing which product is best for you.

You can think of these forms of Vitamin A as rungs on a ladder; Vitamin A being the strongest and at the top, followed by Retinoic Acid, RetinAl (which we will discuss), Retinol and many more. As you move down the ladder, each become less potent. Dalia Stoddard, Rodan + Fields VP of Product Development explains it nicely below, but I’ll do my best to briefly explain it as well.

Retinoic Acid:

This is the purest form of Vitamin A, which can only be prescribed by a doctor. It is so strong that most poeple can only use it a few times a week. Though it really sheds the layers of the skin off quicker than Retinol, it can be rather harsh on the skin and really irritate it. This can deter people from wanting to use it.

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that you can find in your typical over-the-counter products. It isn’t quite as strong as retinoic acid, meaning once it’s on your skin it has to convert two different times in order for it to turn into Vitamin A. Many people prefer this since it tends to be gentler on the skin. However, it isn’t as effective; taking much longer to see results.

Retinal falls much closer on the ladder than Retinol (like 20x more potent) and is the closest you can get to Vitamin A without a prescription from a doctor. It only takes one conversion to turn into Vitamin A, which means you will see results quicker than your Retinol products.

Now let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

Retinal-MD Technology:

Rodan + Fields has created proprietary technology called Retinal-MD, which means that they have been able to stabilize it for everyday use. That means you get near prescription strength Vitamin A, which is very effective yet gentle enough not to irritate your skin. This super serum comes contained in tiny blue capsules, one for each use. This is due to the fact that oxygen and light lessen the effectiveness of the product. R+F realized this was the best way to deliver the product to the consumer in order to ensure its efficacy. #smart  So think about that when you’re considering other Retinol based products that come in pumps or tubes.

But Wait! There’s More!!

“The Best Spent Minute in Skincare”

Rodan + Fields has created a powerful duo, which they’ve called the AMP MD System. It includes a Derma-roller and two month supply of the Intensive Renewing Serum. The AMP MD Roller utilizes micro-exfoliation technology to accelerate your results and provide advanced skin-firming benefits for smoother, softer skin. The roller has tiny micro-needles that create little pathways in your skin, which allow products to go deeper into the skin for faster results. That also puts your skin into “repair” mode, which means your skin will naturally create collagen. Sounds scary, right? It really isn’t! You can roll as soft or hard as you feel comfortable, and when you use it in conjunction with our super serum, you will love your results! It only takes one minute a day, which is why this is one of my absolute favorite products in our lineup. You can add this combo to Redefine (our anti-aging skincare routine) or Reverse (or routine for skin discoloration). I’ve provided a few links below that further explain the science behind it, and of course a link to purchase. Drop a comment below if you have any questions!
